United States of America-Office of the Assistant Treasurer of the United States at Baltimore. Act of February 25, 1862, Section 4. $1000 5% Certificate. Hessler X134C. Remainder. Fine.An intriguing Federal loan type, often collected alongside the other Friedberg listed Interest Bearing notes. The certificate size and the fact that issued examples are seen in worn condition, indicate an instrument that could and did circulate. The loan itself could be as short term as 30 days and there was a blank line for the interest rate making this technically a variable rate instrument. Because of this feature, they paid less interest than the five-twenties. They were issued from various official treasurers offices across the country. Most types and offices are not known. This is a remainder, printed on bond paper, by the National Bank Note Company. 22.5cm by 10.0cm. Deep vermillion frame and four elaborate security dies across. BALTIMORE in vermillion at top center. Seated Victory with flags bottom center is yet another patriotic image used on Union notes and bonds during the war. Upper corners with 1000 dies composed of overlapped circular UNITED STATE TREASURY micro-lettered elements. Left end with Baltimore Clearing House Association text. Perpendicular left center is additional obligation. Vermillion back for transfer endorsements with engraved text perpendicular. No. 240. The Hessler Plate Note. This is also the plated note in Hesslers "Proof and Specimen Notes" volume on page 89. Excellent, vibrant color. Several vertical folds, small splits have been crudely sealed along the edges. Top margin trimmed in slightly. Glenn Jacksons penciled cost code on the back edge identifies the pedigree. This Baltimore Office type is extremely rare and may be the only example known from this location. New York certificates are seen more frequently and often sell for $5,000 or more. This type is much rarer and realized $1,375 in 1990 at the NASCA-Smythe Memphis auction. From the John E. Herzog Collection; 1990 Memphis Sale #89 (NASCA division of R.M. Smythe & Co. June 15-16, 1990, lot 3218); Dr. Glenn Jackson Estate.
