United States of America. Designated Depository Office of the United States at Cincinnati. $10000 5% Certificate. Hessler X134E. Remainder. Very Good.A very rare and significant high denomination Federal note. This is a curious remainder that has seen ample circulation with embedded soiling, despite not being signed or issued. This $10,000 denomination type differs greatly from the lesser denomination types printed at the National Bank Note Company. It appears to be the only denomination for a type that should have had its own Hessler series type number. Engraved and printed on bond paper by the American Bank Note Co., New-York. 22.5cm by 10.0cm. Black frame, titles, and obligations across. Green guilloche across bottom center with two outlined white 10.000 on green color oblong dies. Top center "The Eagles Nest" in oval engraved by Louis Delnoce. Lower left, standing Zouave with the distinctive uniform details beautifully rendered by F.O.C. F Darley (famous American illustrator) and engraved by Joseph Ives Pease. Left end with New York Clearing House text, outside the bordering. Green transfer back with perpendicular text. No. 36. Not the plate note in Hessler, but another Cincinnati Office example (serial 73) is pictured on page 233. Well printed and with vibrant green color on both sides maintained, despite some soil. This is worn enough that the paper is soft and there is a short edge tear at the upper right. A few scattered pinholes. There are only a few known of this type for all depository offices. That includes a face color Proof on Boston which sold for five-figures in January 2017. A certified St. Louis $10,000 PMG Very Fine 25 Net realized $11,162.50 in January 2017 at the FUN auction. These have become well appreciated over the years for their great rarity, beauty, and importance in Civil War financing. An important high denomination Federal instrument. From the John E. Herzog Collection; 1990 Grand Central Sale #90 (R. M. Smythe & Co., November 1990, Lot 3254).
