United States of America-Department of the Interior. Act of March 3, 1855. 40 Acres Bounty Land. Hessler-Not listed. Issued. Fine.Like the 1850 act, these certificates, supervised by the Office of the Commissioner of Pensions, are essentially "40 Acres and a Mule" documents and were issued to war veterans or their widows. This Act and type is not listed in Hessler. Printed on bond paper by Danforth, Wright & Co. 32.0cm by 25.5cm. Fabulous layout with titles enclosing a top central red color geometric pattern cartouche composed of overlapping Durand patented elements for a shield with outlined "40 ACRES." Flanking are historical vignettes of the Death of General Warren at the left and Presentation of the Declaration of Independence at the right. Lower left seated America with eagle and shield. Lower right, three allegorical Americans. Red FIFTY ACRES/BOUNTY LAND protector. Embossed seal. Bottom, transfer form. No. 424 and issued in 1856 for service in the Alabama and Georgia Militia during the Seminole War. Blank verso with multiple Alabama related endorsements. Included are two typed, notarized, documents from after 1900 concerning the piece. Multiple folds, some toning, various splits on the hard folds. Overall appealing and a rare type. The Seminole War association make this an interesting military piece. Purchased over a generation ago at Smythe & Co.s 1990 Memphis Sale. From the John E.
