1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 3-A, W-6210. Rarity-4-. Period After MASSACHUSETTS. AU-50 (PCGS).;156.3 grains. Overall dark copper patina with areas of lighter medium brown evident on the obverse. This is a well centered, sharply defined piece with no significant abrasions to the surfaces. Accuracy does compel us to mention a somewhat rough texture with considerable surface scale, these features more pronounced on the reverse; the same side exhibits a pair of shallow edge bumps outside the letter C in MASSACHUSETTS. Although Ryder 3-A is only a scarce die marriage for the 1788 Massachusetts cent, it is a conditionally challenging one that can be difficult to locate in grades above EF. Our (Stacks) Ford V sale of October 2004 included two AUs, lots 120 and 121, both of which were described as Condition Census for the variety.;From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection. Purchased from Dave Bland, May 1982. Collector envelope with provenance notation included.
