1785 Connecticut Copper. Miller 4.4-D, W-2380. Rarity-7. Bust Right. VG Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS). Secure Holder.;A generally steel-brown example with areas of lighter orange-copper patina that are generally associated with the higher points of the devices. The surfaces are uniformly rough in texture with microscopic pitting, a few old scratches are evident at the upper left obverse and lower right reverse borders, the latter side also with prominent planchet fissures before the seated figure. The strike is generally well centered, although isolated peripheral devices have been lost to wear. The obverse effigy and seated figure on the reverse are mostly outlined, the latter with some sharper detail remaining. The date is weak with only portions of the digits 785 discernible. As of our (Stacks) January 2000 sale of the Perkins Collection, only five examples of this variety were known: our (Stacks) sale of June 1995:29, generally VF, and likely still among the finest known; Taylor:2316; Perkins:199; our (Bowers and Merenas) sale of November 1984:2738, possibly the coin offered here; and the ANS specimen. Although a few more examples have since come to light, the 1785 Miller 4.4-D Connecticut remains rare. This variety was absent from both the Norweb and Ford collections.;Possibly from our (Bowers and Merenas) Lee F. Hewitt Collection sale, November 1984, lot 2738, although we have been unable to confirm this provenance since the coin was not plated in that catalog.
