JAPAN. Oban (10 Ryo), ND Genroku Era (ca. 1695-1704). PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Fr-4; JNDA-09-7 (3); Bank of Japan-Vol. 3-Unlisted; JV-A4; Hartill-8.9. Weight: 165.22 gms. 157.82 x 98.13 mm. Mintage: 30,000. Security edge. This highly attractive and seldom encountered type displays light signs of handling with virtually complete ink, exhibiting minor loss primarily contained to the high points with an additional ink inscription on the reverse. The hammer marks are fairly evenly spaced in about seven columns with the Kiri stamps and control marks being unevenly applied; all with varying degrees of flatness. This richly toned survivor offers much originality, displaying mottled sunset hued patina on both sides. The second example of this type represented inside The Pinnacle Collection, we assume it was added for its different control marks on the reverse. In this alluring quality, sure to catch the attention of many advanced collectors looking to add this type to their numismatic holdings. An interesting characteristic of this type is the addition of a fourth central stamp on the reverse above top Kiri crest emblem indicating the era in which it was manufactured. Added marks such as this are commonly found on the reverse of Kobans beginning with the Genroku type and ending with the Ansei type. It is also important to note that the Genroku type is the only Oban to have had era stamps applied to them, which instantly sets them apart and makes attribution simple. From the Pinnacle Collection.
