This nicely preserved survivor offers a pleasing appearance with nicely spaced hammer marks, but somewhat uneven Kiri stamps on both the obverse and reverse. Though the ink has remained remarkably intact with only trivial losses in the lower portion of the signature, it is the opinion of this cataloger that the ink is original and has not been restored. The calligraphy on the present example differs slightly when compared to examples that have been officially re-inked during the later Tempo and Manen eras, which exhibit a distinctly different signature style. This seldom encountered type offers much originality with a pleasing pale golden patination in the centers and areas of richer coloration around the peripheries of the reverse. Though the Obans of this era have a somewhat low mintage, this particular issue has at least six different combinations of the makers marks found on the lower portion of the reverse.
