JAPAN. Oban (10 Ryo), ND Keicho Era (ca. 1601-95). PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Fr-3; JNDA-09-5 (2A); Bank of Japan-Vol. 2 # 12; JV-A3; Hartill-8.6. Weight: 164.45 gms. 147.74 x 91.95 mm. Mintage: 16,565. Crude security edge. This attractive well-preserved example exhibits light signs of handling, with a mostly intact ink signature that displays areas where the ink on the high points has started to fade away. The hammer marks are fairly evenly spaced in seven columns, with the Kiri stamps and control marks uneven, each with varying degrees of flatness. The control marks on the reverse are in line with each other, which is a characteristic not encountered on other Obans and is quite an interesting aspect. The additional ink inscription on the reverse, though nicely preserved has also started to fade. The reverse also displays two white stickers, each with neatly written Japanese inscriptions. This handsome survivor displays a lovely pale gold color, complemented by mottled sunset hued patina that adds to its pleasing appearance and desirability. From the Pinnacle Collection.
