This nicely preserved survivor of the heavily sought after Genroku Oban is somewhat crude in style as compared to other examples of the type, with the most noticeable difference being the chisel marks which are identical to those found on Kobans; thin shallow lines instead of the thicker heavier hammer marks normally encountered. The Kiri stamps, control marks and the era designator are all slightly uneven with each exhibiting varying degrees of flatness. The surfaces exhibit minor signs of handling with a nearly complete signature displaying trivial ink loss and additional ink inscriptions on the reverse, two of which are very faint and somewhat difficult to read. The pale gold tone coupled with areas of richer coloration near the edges offers a pleasing appearance for this very desirable type.This highly interesting example of the issue, though appearing to have deviated from the style of manufacture, becomes apparent that it was indeed produced at the same location as the other Genroku Oban also in this sale. Upon close inspection of the era stamp on the reverse, it is clear that it is shared with the other example in this sale, but from a later die state, proving that it was made at a later time.
