Considered VERY RARE and desirable by numismatists, this highly coveted lovely large format "Naga" Oban seldom appears on the market, especially so outside of Japan. The ink signature remains mostly intact with fading and loss primarily contained to the high points, with additional ink inscriptions on the reverse of varying degrees of preservation as is commonly encountered on these early types. The hammer marks appear to be random and haphazardly applied indicating far less sophistication than in later eras. The Kiri emblems and official stamps are all unevenly applied, each with varying degrees of flatness. Upon close inspection of the reverse, a small punch mark near the edge at 3 oclock and a few thin scratches from long ago in the lower left quadrant are noticed, but are mentioned for the sake of accuracy and are hardly distracting considering the magnitude of this rarity. This lovely survivor displays an attractive pale golden color that is complemented by areas of richer patination throughout, which adds to its pleasing appearance. The opportunity to acquire such a highly sought Japanese treasure does not present itself often, and as such, serious consideration should be taken by potential bidders looking to participate for the chance to obtain this trophy piece.
