United States of America. Acts of September 24, 1917, amended April 4, 1918. $50. 4-1/4% Coupon Gold Bond of 1927-1942-Second Liberty Loan Converted. May 9, 1918. Choice Very Fine. This is the lowest denomination from one of the most popular series of Liberty Loan certificates. Its blazing golden tinting and coupon color make it seem a gigantic gold certificate. The short-coupon (coupons 1-4) converted loans were exchanged for this type. Long coupon, under and to the side (Cu and Cs) type and complete coupons from 5 to 49. The layout is similar to the First Liberty Loan converted. Printed at the BEP. 20.5cm by 17.5cm (excluding coupons). Gold undertint sunburst radiates from eternal flame vignette with deeper gold title in text and gold coupons, Jefferson top center, flanked by $50 gold dies. Blue spoked Treasury seal. Brown back with standing allegorical woman representing freedom, holding the Statue of Liberty in one hand, and caressing the flag with the other. She floats above the U.S. Capitol building. Embossed seal. The bond is complete and this is an exceptional example. Fully original paper quality, well embossed seal, bright from the face and back. Exceptionally bold colors. Though not the rarest of Liberty Loans types, these always perform at or well above expectations and this is a superior example. From the John E. Herzog Collection.
