United States of America. Acts of September 24, 1917, amended April 4, 1918. $50. 4-1/4% Coupon Gold Bond of 1933-1938-Fourth Liberty Loan. October 24, 1918. Very Fine.Speaking for itself, this Liberty Loan serial number 1 bond is a trophy for the finest collection. The Liberty Loans continued with billions of dollars more issued, but visually this stands out immediately with that solitary light brown "1" at the upper right, proving this bonds majestic nature. Like most of the short coupon bond types, these are rare in general. They were used for this short span with the four coupons under and were exchangeable into the large format long bonds to continue bearing interest well after World War I was over. Printed at the BEP. Size and plate layout like earlier short coupon bonds. 16.0cm by 22.5cm. Brown FOURTH LIBERTY /LOAN title across and brown Treasury seal underneath. Jefferson top center, flanked by $50 dies. Brown back with eagle in circle. Embossed seal. No. 1. Face plate E170. Complete with four coupons. Choice with minimal handling, penned name on top back panel edge. Stunning overall. Obviously impossible to estimate. There are hundreds of serial number 1 large size and small size type notes. We have never handled anything remotely like this before and it really stands out. The estimate is conservative. The next owner will be the caretaker of this special Liberty Loan bond enjoyed by this renowned collectors of financial history. This is truly a museum masterpiece. It is priceless. From the John E. Herzog Collection.
