United States of America. Act of April 24, 1917. $50 4-1/4% First Liberty Loan Converted 4-1/4% Gold Bond of 1932-1947. May 9, 1918. Very Fine. The short-lived, short coupon "First Converted" bonds were replaced by these large format certificates. The bonds were printed at the BEP from immense steel plates and this format carried over twice more, but with different color tints, backs, and of course titles. This is the quintessential long coupon type and this series is exceptionally beautiful with its face color tint scheme. Printed at the BEP. 20.5cm by 17.5cm (not including coupons). 58 coupons, 15 clipped off for $1.06 each (the first four coupons were on the short-coupon bond of this series). A common layout was used for each denomination. Jefferson (as used on Small Size Legal Tender notes) top center, titles and text, and engraved signatures; all with ornate frame. A spectacular tint plate. Blue sunburst background radiates from eternal flame vignette at bottom center with deeper blue title in text, Blue coupons. Red spoked Treasury seal. Brown back, WWI soldiers ("Johnnies") take a hill with the American Standard. The imagery foreshadows the iconic Iwo Jima photograph of World War II. Natural bond folds, crisp and vivid. Lovely. This realized $700 at the 1990 Memphis sale and has been in the Herzog Collection since. Worth considerably more now and not often encountered. There are few known and this example is choice. From the John E. Herzog Collection; 1990 Memphis Sale #89 (NASCA division of R.M. Smythe & Co. June 15-16, 1990, lot 2576).
