United States of America. Acts of September 24, 1917, amended April 4, 1918.. $50 4-1/4% Registered Gold Bond of 1927-1942-Second Liberty Loan Converted. May 9, 1918. Fine to Very Fine. This is an amazing registered bond from the series and of great rarity. This might be the first reported and published in a numismatic auction catalog. Not on the Herbstman Collection listings. Registered, for same length as short-coupon, the interest commencing on the engraved date when sold to the buyer. Printed at the BEP. Small format bond. 16.0cm by 22.0cm. Green title in text, loan type, and seal. Jefferson top center, flanked by $50 dies. Brown back with transfer accomplished. Embossed seal. Issued May 15, 1918. No. 66559. Note the relatively low serial number. This faces up brightly, but we describe it conservatively overall. Excellent paper seen from the face, which is bright with a well embossed seal. Soiling on the back, particularly on vertical crease. Crayon marks. The only other bond from this registered series we found was sold in 2002 by CAA for $1,322.50. This might be a unique denomination and has an unspecified pedigree. It may have been purchased privately long ago from the R.M. Smythe obsolete securities research division (founded by Roland Smythe, later Robert D. Fisher). A great discovery is offered here. From the John E. Herzog Collection.
