United States of America. Acts of September 24, 1917, amended April 4, 1918. $100. 4-1/4% Coupon Gold Bond of 1927-1942-Second Liberty Loan Converted. May 9, 1918. Very Fine.A second denomination from this popular and beautiful series. Long coupon type. Printed at the BEP. 20.5cm by 17.5cm. Layout and style as the $50 bond. Gold undertint sunburst radiates from eternal flame vignette with deeper gold title in text and gold coupons, Jackson top center, flanked by $100 gold dies. Orange back with allegorical female representing freedom as used on this series. Multiple coupons clipped with 18 to 49 remaining with the principal bond. Another pleasing, fresh and original bond. Sharply embossed seal, bright from the face. Exceptional bold colors on both sides. A handsome type. Fewer coupons than the last, but a higher denomination. The Herbstman rarity rating might be a little liberal for these bonds. We believe there are fewer than 15 or so gold tinted bonds of either denomination. Supposedly the $50 bonds are less observed at this time. This brought $4,150 in 2004 which indicates its rarity. From the John E. Herzog Collection; 2004 Strasburg Sale #235 (R.M. Smythe & Co., February 6, 2004, lot 1144).
