United States of America. Acts of September 24, 1917, amended April 4, 1918. $500. 4-1/4% Coupon Gold Bond of 1933-1938-Fourth Liberty Loan. October 24, 1918. Choice Very Fine.Though $50 and $100 bonds from this issue are encountered and available, this denomination is significant and very rare. It was auctioned in the 2004 Strasburg Stock & Bond sale and realized nearly $10,000. We do not think we have seen another and this type is not on the Herbstman listings. Long coupon type, sides and under. Printed at the BEP. 20.5cm by 17.5cm. Layout as the other denomination bonds. Large green sunburst in center. Green FOURTH/LIBERTY LOAN title with red Treasury seal. Washington top center, flanked by green 500 dies. Blue back with Justice holding orb and scales. Embossed seal. There are 18 coupons remaining from the original. A stunning bond, especially with the rarely used blue ink for the back which is visually very appealing. Normal bond folds only, fresh and original. Rarity and condition truly add to the bonds panache. Easily among the highlights from Johns stellar collection of this fascinating genre. It is never easy to estimate items like this, but high denomination bonds are rarely seen and few were never redeemed. This seems like a five-figure bond in our opinion and will be a showpiece. From the John E. Herzog Collection; 2004 Strasburg Sale #235 (R.M. Smythe & Co., February 6, 2004, lot 1150).
