T-12. Confederate Currency. 1861 $5. PCGS Currency Very Fine 25.No. 2865, Plate F. These 1861 Fives are commonly known as "Manouviers" after their printer Jules Manouvier of New Orleans. Though they were the only 1861 Confederate notes to feature a printed back, the design was considered to be simplistic and easily counterfeited by the Confederate Treasury Department. Only one shipment of notes was received from the printer and no additional orders were made. Just 15,556 T-12s were issued. Many that survive today are well worn and in the range of Very Good to Fine. Even when these notes approach the Very Fine range they are often dark and show little of the blue printed back design. The note offered here is evenly circulated and bright. The face is boldly printed and the back, while a touch light, is clean and legible. This is a very appealing example of a type that can be elusive in higher grades. From the Green Valley Collection.
