T-23. Confederate Currency. 1861 $10. PCGS Currency Very Fine 25.No. 2987, Plate A. Great color is displayed by this sharply printed and nicely framed 1861 Ten. The orange tinted overprints remain strong and largely free of oxidation. The paper is solid for the grade and free of cancellation. These 1861 Tens were based on the $10 notes made for the Mechanics Savings Bank of Savannah, Georgia. The gentlemen who appears at left on both those notes and the T-23 is John Elliot Ward. Ward was president of the Mechanics Savings Bank and ironically was opposed to succession. He eventually fled the South to practice law in New York City. From the Green Valley Collection.
