Government of the Republic of Hawaii. Act of June 13, 1896. $1000 5% 20 Year Gold Coupon Bond. Specimen. Very Fine.A completely different bond, issued after "independence" which was not exactly in the Native Hawaiians best interests. It is in an impressive, large green coupons on the side certificate format. The $2,000,000 bond issue was to clear out previous royal loan issues, other debt, and new public works. Unlike the Royal Hawaiian bond issue above, this bond was enacted by a governing council. Engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Company on bond paper. 32.0cm by 45.0cm principal certificate (not including the coupons). Green frame and back. Sanford Dole, as President of Hawaii, signature lower right and his portrait at upper left. Hawaiian Arms top center, with the crown removed. 1000 green protector in center. Another great bond rarity. There may have only been this denomination in the archives, but that is always impossible to verify due the nature of Specimens. Some may have been sent to Hawaii or other places for approvals. This is fairly choice for such a large size bond. Normal splits from bond drawer storage, vibrant overall. There is supposed to be a small tear described in 1997. That is academic. Few examples exist from the series. This item is historically important and exceedingly rare or possibly unique. Its beauty is indisputable. From the John E. Herzog Collection;1991 Memphis International Mail Bid Auction #97 (R.M. Smythe & Co., June 27, 1991, lot 3787); American Banknote Company Archives.
