Hawaiian Government-Hawaiian Government Stock U. Act of August 5, 1882. $5000 6% 25 Year Coupon Bond. Specimen. Fine-Very Fine. The existence of these Specimen loan certificates illustrates American interests in the financial exploitation of the islands. Initially this exploitation took place with the royal family in power; they did their best to protect the land and other rights of Native Hawaiians. The Americans backed the coup (helped by U.S. Marines) that led to the queens ouster in 1893 to form a republic. Hawaii was officially annexed to the United States in 1898. These dollar denominated bonds were part of a $200,000 authorization. The bond issue was at the prerogative of the Royal Family and not an elected council or legislature. The principal was payable in 5 Years or any time up to 25 years, or a "five-twenty-five." No issued bonds exist. This is a large coupons under bond ("Cu"). Engraved and printed by the American Bank Note Company. 32.0cm by 19.0cm, excludes coupons, and the left side stub portion. Blue frame with Hawaiian Arms as seen on coins top center. At the left, King William Lunalilo (reigned 1873-1874). Blue 5000 protector. 50 coupons with portrait of Kalakaua (then king, portrait appearing on the 1883 coins). Back with allegorical Agriculture on three panels. Only Specimen bonds exist from this act and there are very few. These surfaced in the bond drawer archives at the American Banknote Company and were bought privately in an immense deal that Smythe & Co. brokered through auction. This has not been sold for 21 years and this is only its second offering ever. Archive handling is heavy, due to folding. Fine to Very Fine, normal bond splits on panels from the hard folding (as used for drawer storage at the ABN warehouses). However, exceedingly rare and historic. From the John E. Herzog Collection;1991 Memphis International Mail Bid Auction #97 (R.M. Smythe & Co., June 27, 1991, lot 3785); American Banknote Company Archives.
