[Great Britain]. Scrip for R.M. Rothschild & Sons for United States Government 4 Per Cent Loan of $62,317,500. $500. February 1, 1895. Very Fine. This is Specimen certificate for a bond scrip used in London to purchase United States 4% Consols. There was a discount for using this scrip though Rothschild & Sons to purchase bonds, but missing a payment was default and prior payments were kept. This issue appears to be for United States bonds not authorized (based on trying to align enactments in this period with the capitalization printed on the certificate prepared here for Rothschild & Sons), but only proposed by the Federal government. Uniface on bond paper by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Vertical landscape 24.5cm by 39.5cm. Gray frame, with titles on the side, and back medallion on one panel. Typeset with three payments due to complete and receive a U.S. $500 loan. Imprinted One Penny Revenue stamp upper left. There were 5000 certificates authorized as enumerated (25001-30000) at the top of the Specimen. Minimal handling. Perhaps a unique form. From the John E. Herzog Collection; previously Scott Winslows May 2005 Sale.
