Undated (1805) Washington Eccleston Medal. Bronzed Copper. 76 mm. By Thomas Webb, for Daniel Eccleston. Musante GW-88, Baker-85. MS-62 BN (NGC).,Nice things often come in pairs, it is said, so here is a reprise. Minor contact marks are present on both sides, and there is a tiny carbon spot before Washingtons chin. However, this is still a superior example of this impressive medal. The planchets for these large pieces were, of necessity, cast, and specimens normally exhibit porous surfaces. That natural planchet porosity is present on this piece, to a minor degree -- more so on the reverse than the obverse. Typical die crack at center right of the reverse. As noted above, Quaker eccentric Daniel Eccleston combined his admiration of Washington with his lifelong advocacy of Native American rights in this bold design, which depicts Washington in medieval armor juxtaposed with a nearly naked Native American.
