Undated (C. 1858) Washington Tomb Entrance by Smith and Hartmann. White Metal. 64 mm. Musante GW-207, Baker-117B. MS-63PL (NGC).,Marked F.B. SMITH & HARTMANN N.Y. on Washingtons truncation. Essentially brilliant with boldly reflective prooflike fields and sharp satiny devices that create a pleasant cameo contrast. A bit of pale blue and gray toning in the fields is evident when turned to a certain angle in the light. A trace of handling and minor hairlines, commensurate with the grade assigned. Excellent eye appeal with only a few microscopic pesting flecks. These were made in silver, bronze and white metal, and Musante lists them all as very rare.Form Gilbert Steinberg, Stacks, May 1992, lot 69; Fairfax Collection of Washington medals, Stacks, May 1993, lot 105; Heritage, September 2006, lot 6414.
