Undated (circa 1856) Washington Eight Presidents Medal. White Metal. 46 mm. By William H. Bridgens. Musante GW-153R, Baker-221D. MS-63 (NGC).,A rather attractive example of this distinctive medal, believed to have originated in the 1840s based on the most recent president depicted, Martin Van Buren, who was in office until March 1841. Original impressions are thick and signed with the makers name on the reverse, William H. Bridgens. They are rarely seen, and even John Ford did not have one. The example offered here is the usual style on a thinner planchet, the dies having been refinished with Bridgens name removed. This is thought to be circa 1856 based on the mulings of the Eight Presidents portraits die with James Buchanan campaign medals. The surfaces are bright and lustrous, with some gentle pesting on the portraits that serves to accentuate the design actually making the medal more visually striking.
