Undated (C. 1876) Washington’s Mount Vernon by Frederick B. Smith. White Metal. 64 mm. Musante GW-213, Baker-110. Uncirculated Details, Obverse Spot Removed (NGC).,Marked F.B. SMITH F.N.Y. on Washingtons truncation. A couple of small areas of tooling on the obverse account for the designation by NGC, the most obvious being just left of the bust point. A bit of additional handling is noted including some light hairlines and other small marks. Fairly uniform light pewter gray. Though dated to circa 1858 by NGC and, earlier, by Rulau and Fuld, Musante points out that this medal was not reported by Snowden in 1861, nor Appleton in 1873, suggestive of a later manufacture. This medal is only known in this composition. From Early American History Auctions, April 2003, lot 362; Heritage, September 2006, lot 6411.
