拍品描述： 1841 Andrew Canel Medal. Copper. 46.5 mm. Musante GW-158. MS-64BN (NGC).，Dark chocolate brown with iridescent blue highlights in the prooflike obverse fields. A few scattered spots are noted but they are not severe or too distracting on this otherwise very pleasant medal. Sharply and evenly struck, with reeded rims on both sides. In their revised edition of Bakers Medallic Portraits of Washington, Russell Rulau and George Fuld included this medal noting that it was "unknown to William S. Baker in his 1885 opus." They further commented that a copper example was reported but unconfirmed. Most likely, the fact that it does not bear a portrait was central to Baker having left it out of his work, as he participated in the Bushnell sale where one was offered and he would certainly have been aware of it. The assertion that a copper example had been reported but not confirmed, right alongside mention of the Garrett specimen which was copper and from these dies, defies explanation. It would seem that there are at least two known in copper from these dies. The first is the aforementioned Bushnell-Garrett specimen, and the other is this piece which is clearly a different one. Examples from these dies are also known in silver and white metal, though all are very rare. A second variety of this medal also exists (Musante GW-159). It is of cruder style, seemingly of equal rarity and known only in copper. John J. Ford owned five Canel medals, one in each of the three compositions from these dies (including the Garrett piece mentioned above) and two of the cruder styled pieces.
