1858 Lancaster County Agricultural and Mechanical Society Medal. Silver. 45 mm. Musante GW-239, Baker-339, Julian AM-27. Inscribed to “Ewd. Stewart.” MS-62 (NGC).,A lovely specimen of this medal with deeply prooflike fields and sharp, satiny devices. Scattered marks and light hairlines commensurate with the grade are a bit magnified by the reflectivity, but for a silver medal awarded to a non-numismatist, this piece is in excellent condition. Many of these were carried, polished or otherwise harshly treated by their recipients who, though they valued the award highly, might not have held equal respect for the medals themselves or considered that future owners would give a thought to the condition of the surfaces. Hand engraved on the reverse to "Ewd. Stewart / for best case / Birds /1860. Accomplished a bit roughly, as is typical of these issues, with faint guidelines still visible and a bit of tooling, likely done by the engraver as a quick fix. According to Julian, these medals were struck at the Mint during 1859 and 1860 for use of the Society, and 85 were made in silver. The dies, deemed "no longer fit for use," were returned to the Society in 1870.Donated by Stanley DeForest Scott to benefit the endowment campaign for the Executive Director position at the American Numismatic Society.
