C. 1797 Washington Presidency Resigned Medal by Thomas Wyon. White Metal. 37.4 mm. Musante GW-64, Baker-66. MS-62 (PCGS).,A very even and attractive patina with medium pewter gray nearly throughout and just a slight bit of lighter surface around the devices. One nearly inconsequential pesting spot is noted at the rim over Washingtons head, and is useful for identifying this as from the famous John J. Ford, Jr. Collection. When we sold the Ford holdings, this piece was catalogued as an unpublished variant. As noted in the description above, the Baker-66 medals have now been recategorized into four different dies and combinations, three of which are included in Neil Musantes 2016 reference, Medallic Washington.
This variety is a combination of Musantes 2nd Obverse and 1st Reverse. The obverse legend is tighter around the portrait, and WASHINGTON ends just below the rear point of the shoulder. On the reverse, the 1 in the date is positioned directly under the left foot of the S in RESIGNED.
Only the finest collections of Washington medals tend to include this medal and this is a particularly nice example. From Paul Magriel via Paul Kagin to John J. Ford, Jr., September 1970; our sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part II, May 2004, lot 81.
