1861弗吉尼亚州国库券500元 PMG Choice VF 35
Richmond, Virginia. Virginia Treasury Note. Sept. 25, 1861. $500. PMG Choice Very Fine 35.(Shull Cr. 1861-B / Jones-Littlefield VT02-04) Hoyer & Ludwig. Richmond, VA. Serial number 3028, Plate A. Issue date of Sept. 25, 1861. Commerce, Ceres and Navigation at left. Washington at right. Red overprint with 500 flanked by females. These $500 Treasury Notes were authorized by an act of April 30, 1861 which allowed for up to $3,000,000 in 6% interest-bearing Treasury Notes in denominations of no less than $20. Only 6,150 examples of the $500 denomination were issued. By late 1863 just 217 remained outstanding and more were redeemed through the end of the war. pThis newly discovered note is just the third example of this important Southern States currency type that we can confirm. The encyclopedic Jones-Littlefield reference on Virginia currency plates an example consecutive to the presently offered piece, it being serial number 3029. The other known note is the Newman Collection example which graces the cover of Hugh Shulls emA Guide Book of Southern States Currency./em That note, with serial number 1002, sold for an eye-popping $70,500 in an April 2015 auction. pThe currently offered note is the finest of the two examples graded. It comes fully framed and displays only light traces of circulation. The paper is bright and creamy white in color. Dark lithographed inks present this prohibitively rare type in great detail. All of the handwritten inks are darkly penned and clear. This note is far superior than the previously mentioned Newman example which is heavily impaired despite the PCGS Currency assigned grade of Extremely Fine 40 Apparent. That note is backed and seen with edge tears and repairs along with paper scuffs. In comparison the note offered here is wholly original and without impairment.pThis is in our opinion the greatest Southern States currency note ever offered at auction. It is a type certainly missing from all but two of the most advanced collections in existence. Active collectors must take notice that this may be their last chance to obtain this ultra rare type as it could be decades before another becomes available. pp
