United States of America. Act of February 11, 1847. $25 6% War Bounty Scrip. Hessler X117A. Fully Issued. Fine.A rare and fully accomplished certificate which is listed in Hessler and the type plated on page 163. Issued and with some collateral material supplied by John Rowe who sold this to John J. Ford, Jr. in 1978. This was issued in 1848 to James Cherry, who was descended from Aaron Cherry (possibly the first white settler from the United States to settle in Texas). The loan was issued in lieu of 40 Acres of Land specified by the act. The term was indefinite, but interest ceased on July 1, 1849. Only $2,900 in these certificates were outstanding as of 1925. Printed on bond paper and engraved by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson. 27.0cm by 16.5cm. Classical vignettes from the imprint with ethereal Prosperity with shield and eagle at top center, Justice left and Liberty seated right in ovals, intricate end scroll work. Red protector TWENTY FIVE in two lines. Verso transfer printed in brown. Serial no. 1539. Fully accomplished and signed by the Register. Transferred in County of Colorado, Texas and fully signed. Wax seal for county affixed back lower right corner with Texas star. Not redeemed or cancelled. Included is 1925 typed-letter-signed ("TLS") from Treasury, article on Cherry, and Fords pedigree envelope. Full size, though the paper has wear and is soft. Burn mark at the top edge, otherwise finely detailed and sharply penned. A rare issued form with desirable Texas connection. Some might call it Very Good, but its generally a clean piece and a fascinating historical artifact. Bought by John directly at the Ford Part VI sale in New York over 13 years ago. From the John E. Herzog Collection; Ex Stacks John J. Ford, Jr. Collection Part VI, October 12, 2004, lot 485; John Rowe, February 15, 1978.
