United States of America. Act of January 28, 1847. $1000 6% Two Year Note. Hessler X115D. Specimen. Uncirculated.A rare and very attractive Treasury Note, engraved and printed in a size that would permit its movement in commerce on demand if necessary and certainly closely related to Federal currency issues emitted within the following 20 years. Bond paper Specimen note printed on both sides by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. 20.5cm by 9.5cm within original rim mounting from the Vattemare albums. Plate B. Titles and denomination across with bold eagle on rock in harbor at top left center, die with 1000 to right. Portraits of Alexander Dallas and Alexander Gallatin, top and bottom respectively at left. Right end, seated America as an Indian Princess. Rust-red back with geometric dies configuring pattern and interest table in center. Penned serial number "14459" at upper left and penciled "7." The Hessler Plate Note, illustrated on page 152. Issued examples of this are unknown, but face Proofs and Specimens are known. In fact, the two face Proofs of this Hessler X115D style sold in Ford Part VI in October 2005 for $18,400 each (lots 427 and 428), an indicator that currency collectors considered these closely related to the Civil War Interest Bearing notes listed in Friedberg. The type has been listed in the Krause-Lemke work for decades. There is a minor thin at the upper left, otherwise superior condition for a Vattemare item. Two cancels, one larger at the left. Penciled, period "1848" date at back right. This handsome example from the Vattemare sale was last sold in the 1996 Memphis sale by Smythe & Co. Once again, a generation has passed before this wonderful note with its beauty and rarity became available. From the John E. Herzog Collection;1996 Memphis Sale #152 (R.M. Smythe & Co. June 22, 1996, lot 1126); originally Alexander Vattemare Presentation Albums Sale Part One (Robson Lowe/Christies, April 1, 1982, part of lot 688).
