United States of America. Act of January 28, 1847-Payable After 1867. $300 6% Registered Bond. Hessler X116D. Specimen. Uncirculated. The style of this series of Mexican War era period bonds is among the highest for any financial instruments engraved and printed for the United States. Not only is this a great rarity, but it is also a curious and rarely encountered odd denomination. Printed on both sides by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Edson, New-York on bond paper. Large format. 27.0cm by 16.0cm within original rim mounting from the Vattemare albums. Plate B. Federal eagle at top center with state seals forming a banner across the top enclosing with their tips "300" dies. Left end LOAN OF 1847 and at right PAYABLE AFTER 1867. Partially engraved "185_" as date block. Red 300 protector across. Brown back and transfer form. The Hessler Plate Bond. Issued bonds from this issue are exceedingly rare or perhaps unknown. This might be unique as a Specimen bond. Beautiful grade with minimal handling. Several denominations appeared in the 2005 Ford VI sale, all ex Vattemare, and realized $3,000 to $5,000 each. Now, 13 years later this should be worth considerably more. From the John E. Herzog Collection; originally Alexander Vattemare Presentation Albums Sale Part One (Robson Lowe/Christies, April 1, 1982, part of lot 673).
