1838 Modified Matron Head Cent. N-4. Rarity-2. MS-65 BN (PCGS). CAC. A superior Gem with vibrant luster and significant mint red. Boldly struck throughout, the devices are razor sharp and full radial lines are seen on all but a few stars. The Newcomb-4 die variety has a number of collectible die states dealing with progressive cracks and breaks on the obverse. This example is in an intermediate state with a heavy crack over star 9 to the hair bun that extends lightly down across the portrait, bisecting the obverse and landing in the dentils below the middle of the date. A lovely coin that would be a prize for type, date, variety, and die state collectors alike. From the Iron Eagle Collection.
