1794 Liberty Cap Cent. S-53. Rarity-6. Head of 1794. Fine Details--Repaired (PCGS). Deep copper and autumn-brown patina to both sides, all major design elements are boldly defined and the Sheldon-53 variety is readily attributable. The reverse is a tad rough, the obverse with a few pin scratches, scattered digs to both sides. The texture is curiously glossy to suggest smoothing, which helps to explain the PCGS qualifier. The 1794 S-53 is a rare die pairing and virtually all examples in collectors hands are well worn, if not also impaired. Both Del Bland and Bill Noyes assign this piece an EAC grade of G6, Noyes also stating sharpness of VG10. Ex Moore; Heritages sale of the Eugene Exman Collection, June 2015 Long Beach Signature Auction, lot 3765.
