1798. S-180. Rarity-5+. Style II Hair. Extremely Fine. A significant, Condition Census-level example of this key 1798 Sheldon variety. Deep olive brown and steel-gray surfaces are reasonably smooth and attractive, showing no major marks and only traces of microporosity in a few places under magnification. Nicely detailed throughout and has an impressive overall appearance. Breen Die State IV, a late die state with a cud at TATE of STATES and a crack above UN in UNITED, prior to a second cud breaking out in that area in the terminal state. The Condition Census is made up of four coins graded VF per EAC standards, followed by two nice Fines. This newcomer can hold its own among that group and appears especially comparable to the French-Newcomb-ANS coin, called VF-20 Average by Noyes and CC#4 in his list. Even with a most conservative EAC net grade, it seems easily deserving a spot in the top six. A noteworthy offering and a coin that would be a significant upgrade for many advanced large cent collectors.
