1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 56-n, W-5310. Rarity-1. Camel Head--Overstruck on a 1772 Machins Mills Halfpenny, Vlack 5-72A--VF-30 (PCGS). Traces of the undertype are quite pronounced in areas and include, notably, a full date to the right of the New Jersey copper date, part of the shield and the seated figures left arm, and the outline of the effigys profile, bust and the word REX on the reverse. A richly and boldly toned example dressed in blended steely-charcoal and golden-brown, both sides are pleasingly smooth in hand with no significant blemishes. While all examples of the Maris 56-n Camel Head are thought to be overstruck, few retain as bold evidence of the undertype as seen here.
