1760 Contemporary Counterfeit Irish Halfpenny. George II Type--Double Struck--Extremely Fine. 114.4 grains. One of a handful of known die pairings of high quality counterfeits of this one-year type that are "close, but no cigar." The well-placed second strike is about 60% off center towards the 6 oclock position of the obverse, preserving nearly all of the second 1760 date on the reverse. The reverse die is quite distinctive, as the 1 and 0 of the date are entered into the die at about a 45 degree angle rather than straight up and down. Surfaces are glossy and chocolate brown, with just a few very minor areas of inherent planchet roughness. Here is a fantastic error coin in the Irish series.
