1773 Contemporary Counterfeit English Halfpenny. George III Type of 1770-1775. Double Reverse. Very Good. As with the 1771 Double Reverse halfpenny also in this sale, this example is struck from two different</em> reverse dies, whether mounted into the coining press accidentally or purposefully has been lost to the mists of time. One of the dies shows advanced spalling and a pronounced arc of die failure through what would have been BRITAN. The advanced circulation wear on this and the 1771 also in this sale show that just about anything, however unconventional looking, would and did circulate in the mixture of low quality coppers that abounded in late 18th century Great Britain and America.
