1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape. RR-4, Bressett 3-C, W-2015. Rarity-4. VERMONTIS. VF-20 (PCGS). Deep steel and medium brown patina dominates the in hand appearance of this handsome piece, blushes of lighter golden-brown confined to some of the design elements. Both sides are well centered in strike, although isolated areas of softness are noted, most significantly at the upper obverse and toward the lower reverse border. The plow is bold and fully appreciable, as are most other design elements. Planchet fissures are evident over the upper right obverse, as well as here and there around the reverse periphery, all as made and common for a Landscape Vermont. A hint of granularity is noted for accuracy, but apart from a thin scratch above the plow handles that extends into the sun there are no significant marks. Discounting RR-5 -- a contemporary counterfeit known in both cast and struck formats -- RR-4 is the only variety in the Vermont copper series with the VERMONTIS spelling in the obverse legend. As such, this is a significant and desirable design type unto itself that enjoys strong demand in all grades. Collector envelope with attribution notation included.
