1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 48-g, W-5275. Rarity-1. Outlined Shield. EF-40 (NGC). Well centered in strike, both sides retain universally bold to sharp detail throughout the design. The texture is a trifle glossy, and we also note curious pinkish-gold and powder blue undertones, but the surfaces have retoned quite nicely in warm gray-brown from what appears to have been an ancient cleaning. This and many other examples of Maris 48-g exhibit some minor planchet striations from poor metal mixture in this Confederation era mint, which here are more prevalent on the reverse. There are no significant handling marks, however, and this is certainly a pleasing representative of the New Jersey series for the type collector.
