1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 9-M, W-6270. Rarity-6-. Period After MASSACHUSETTS. VF-25 (PCGS). 135.0 grains. A rare die marriage in the series that trades infrequently and when available, is often found in an impaired state; Richard Augusts rarity rating for this die marriage is Rarity-7-. This example is quite acceptable, its jet brown patina reminiscent of a fine Roman sestertius, its surfaces finely granular and displaying a lightning bolt of a planchet lamination through the letters COMMON on the obverse. Well centered and retaining greater detail than expected of PCGS assigned grade -- our consignors estimate of "VF-EF" is perhaps a better, if less precise, descriptor of this coins grade. The last mid-grade Ryder 9-M to trade at auction was the PCGS VF-20 in our March 2019 sale of the Twin Leaf Collection that sold for $1,320. This comparable piece should also fetch a solid price. Ex Michael Demling, purchased privately from Richard August; our sale of the Michael Demling Collection of Massachusetts Cents, March 2018 Baltimore Auction, lot 3043.
