Tecumseh, Michigan. Bank of Tecumseh. 1859. $5. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63. Proof.(MI-435 G30a) Lee TEC 3-14. Four POCs. Aug. 22, 1859. Proof. Printed on India paper. Imprint of American Bank Note Co. Stunning green tinted plate. Vignette of a farmer plowing at upper left. Mother hen with her chicks at lower right. PMG notes "Previously Mounted." Small hinge remnants at back left and right long favored by D.C. Wismer. One of the rarest states for color proofs (not as rare as Florida, but close). We have encountered few color proofs from Michigan over three decades. The majority of Michigan notes are colorless productions of the 1830s "wildcat" banks, and there were few in the later 1858-1866 note-issuing period. We can only find record of two tinted proof sales on this bank over the past two decades. There is this note, which first sold for over $500 fifteen years ago. The other was a $1 Proof, simply graded as Uncirculated, which we sold for $1,725 in 2010 as part of The 52 Collection. A great proof.
