Uncut Sheet of (4) Hawaiian Islands. ND (188x) $10. Uncirculated. Face Special Proofs. These proofs slightly differ than the ones offered in the 1990 ABNC sales as those were printed on india paper and mounted on card. Some of those have punch hole cancellations and specimen printed on them. These proofs here are printed directly onto card stock. Some have speculated that these were issued during the intaglio reprints in 1995. However, that is not the case as these are printed in the correct issued colors unlike the souvenir cards. The souvenir cards also do not have the counter foils in place. The purpose of the changing of colors and the elimination of the counter foils for the souvenir cards was so they could not be cut up and passed as genuine proofs. What we do know is that these are genuine ABNC printed proofs most likely for internal archival reasons that are not documented. We do not know exactly how many proofs were printed but we do know that the smallest denominations were the most plentiful in the archive with possibly as many as a dozen or more examples of the $10 found. A very rare and interesting piece of pre-statehood Hawaiian history that should attract some spirited bidding.
