CC-72. Continental Currency. April 11, 1778. $5. PCGS Currency About New 50.No. 138574. Signed by William Thorne and Robert Cather. Hand pricking thorns vignette surrounded by Latin motto SUSTINE VEL ABSTINE. Newman translates this as Either survive or give up. This Yorktown issue was heavily counterfeited by the British to the point that many of genuine notes were pulled from circulation and destroyed. This has left this as the scarcest of all Continental emissions. Some of these lower denominations are a lot tougher to obtain, particularly at the AU and CU grade levels. Nearly complete borders with superior depth of printing.
