1864 Soldier’s Fair medal by J.A. Bolen. Copper, silvered. 28mm. Musante JAB-16. Fuld 760B-1i. AU-55.,An interesting compositional variant not listed in Musante. Bolen himself reported only having struck two in copper, but 350 in white metal at the Soldiers Fair. However, it has been seen in Brass, copper-nickel and here as silvered copper. It would seem that anything other than white metal is extremely rare. Indeed, the Q. David Bowers collection sold by us in January 2011 had only a circulated white metal example. Bold green, rose and golden gray on the obverse with brighter silver dominating the reverse. From the Tim Gabriele Collection. Earlier ex Presidential Coin and Antiques Auction 53, lot 484; Neil Musante.
