1858 Pioneer Baseball Club medal by J.A. Bolen. Copper. 32mm. Musante JAB-1. MS-64RB (NGC).,A delightful example of this well known and highly prized issue, believed the first medal to depict baseball being played. Some faint hairlines and minor spots are detected under close examination, but overall the eye appeal is very pleasant. Generous red remains around the legends and central motif on the obverse. The reverse is deeper bronze with pale blue-green accents. Clearly double struck on the reverse, but narrowly so. Just 75 are believed to have been struck in copper, the scarcest and most attractive of the two compositions seen as the white metal pieces often appear grainy and rough. From the Tim Gabriele Collection. Earlier ex Henry South.
