1867 J.A. Bolen / Libertas Americana store card. Copper. 25mm. Musante JAB-30. MS-65RB (NGC).,Deeply faded red remains on the obverse with olive brown on the high points and traces of subtle violet in the fields. The reverse is boldly toned with vivid violet, blue and golden iridescence through the fields. Both sides are nicely reflective. Well struck in nice relief, and double struck on the Bolen portrait side, with a small but easily seen rotation noted between strikes. One of the most popular Bolen store cards for his fine replication of the famous Libertas Americana design. The Libertas die was sold to J.W. Kline in 1872 who used it for his own store cards, but the portrait die is said to have been destroyed by Bolen, removing the possibility of restrikes of this variety. Just 16 were reported struck in copper. From the Tim Gabriele Collection. Earlier ex Bowers and Merenas September 1986 Sale, part of lot 5244; Henry South Collection.
