(C. 1862) United States Arsenal medal by J.A. Bolen. Without Sun. Copper. 28mm. Musante JAB-4. MS-63BN (NGC).,Strong prooflike character in the fields, though it is somewhat subdued by a bit of natural surface oil and debris that could likely be removed with care. Bursts of bold orange red remain below the arsenal building on the obverse, and over about 30% of the reverse surface. A few scattered spots and minor handing commensurate with the grade. Just 75 examples are reported to have been struck by Bolen, with the possibility of a few more after the dies were transferred to Dr. Frank Smith Edwards. From the Tim Gabriele Collection. Earlier ex Henry South.
