(ca. 1867) Abraham Lincoln / Emancipation the Great Event medal by J.A. Bolen. Copper. 25mm. Musante JAB-28. MS-64RB (NGC).,Intense orange red on the obverse with minimal fading in the fields left and right of Lincolns portrait. Boldly prooflike on this side, with just a couple of small spots. The reverse has toned a bit more to olive brown, though undertones of faded red remain. Evidence of double striking is seen on both sides, but most prominently on the reverse. Bolen reported 14 struck in this metal, while the American Journal of Numismatics reported 16, and Kline probably struck a few more. Either way, all are quite rare and this issue is particularly desirable for its theme. Once in the Q. David Bowers Collection, but not included in our sale of January 2011.From the Tim Gabriele Collection. Earlier ex Q. David Bowers.
