(C. 1862) United States Arsenal medal by J.A. Bolen. Without Sun. Struck over an 1856 Large Cent. Copper. 28mm. Musante JAB-4. MS-63BN (NGC).,A second example of this popular medal, this one being struck over an 1856 Large cent which adds considerable appeal. The undertype is fairly clear on both sides, with enough of the hosts date visible beneath the letters of SPRINGFIELD to be unmistakable. Gently mottled deep olive and steel brown. Musante cites an example sold as early as an 1874 Cogan Sale. When Bolen medals are found struck on Large Cents, they are more likely than not to be one of the Arsenal types. From the Tim Gabriele Collection.
